JAKARTA: Indonesia ranked 55th out of 139 countries in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025. Compared to its GII ranking in 2024, Indonesia’s position remained unchanged, as it also ranked 55th in the world last year.
According to a press release from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on September 16, 2025, Indonesia has actually maintained its best performance status for three consecutive years.
Indonesia’s lowest ranking was recorded in 2022, when it fell to 75th place. However, it rose sharply to 61st in 2023, climbed again to 55th in 2024, and maintained the same position in 2025.
Among ASEAN member states, Indonesia’s ranking is below Vietnam (44th), Thailand (45th), and the Philippines (54th). If compared with Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, it shows an even wider gap, with Singapore ranking far ahead. In fact, Singapore secured a spot in the global top five most innovative countries in GII 2025, alongside Switzerland (1st), Sweden (2nd), the United States (3rd), South Korea (4th), and Singapore (5th).
WIPO Director General Daren Tang stated in the press release that GII 2025 maps innovation worldwide, highlighting that the fastest-advancing economies in the index are those that view innovation as the main driver of resilience, growth, and competitiveness.
GII 2025 applies around 80 indicators, ranging from research and development (R&D) spending, venture capital (VC) deals, high-tech exports, and intellectual property filings. WIPO evaluated nearly 140 countries based on their innovation performance. The GII serves as a global reference point for policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders to foster innovation and build robust innovation ecosystems.
According to WIPO, international patent applications remained stable but showed low growth. After a decline in patent filings in 2023, international patent applications rose slightly by 0.5 percent in 2024. However, the growth remains fragile, with wide disparities across countries and regions, and a continuing growth slowdown.(JPK/RKH-su)
